In a startling turn of events, a 22-year-old man, Huang Guang Zheng, has been slapped with charges after allegedly attacking a priest at the Church of the Holy Spirit and causing harm to a staggering 11 other victims at various locations around Singapore.
The incident unfolded on February 9 as Huang allegedly punched Father Cary Chan in the face at the Roman Catholic church located on Upper Thomson Road. Not only that, but he also reportedly vandalized church property by slamming a wooden door six times against the wall and knocking over a potted plant.
On August 18, Huang was officially charged with 21 offenses, including nine counts of voluntarily causing hurt, five counts of using criminal force, four charges of mischief, and three incidents categorized as public nuisance.
It’s worth noting that Father Chan, who acts as the assistant parish priest, mentioned that Huang is visually impaired and has special needs, raising questions about the underlying issues behind his actions.
The allegations don't stop there! Huang is also accused of inflicting injuries on three individuals at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jurong East and attacking eight others at public spaces like MRT stations and hawker centres. Charges detail a chilling timeline of violence from April 2024 to July 2025.
One shocking incident occurred on the morning of August 17, 2024, when Huang reportedly kicked and punched three churchgoers during a service, causing a scene by shouting and even shattering a glass door.
Further debauchery unfolded across various MRT stations, where he allegedly used his guiding sticks as weapons, injuring a woman and causing a man to topple backward. In a grotesque display, he even spat on a man at HarbourFront MRT station.
Court records reveal other bizarre acts of aggression, such as punching someone at Maxwell Food Centre, spitting on a cashier’s counter, and wreaking havoc at a hawker centre in Sengkang.
While the court documents remained vague about the triggers for these incidents, Huang's defense attorney is gearing up to challenge his mental capacity to stand trial.
An upcoming community case conference has been arranged at the State Courts Centre for Specialist Services, where a team of professionals will delve into the psychological aspects of Huang’s behavior and potentially guide him towards social services.
Mark your calendars! Huang’s case will next be reviewed on September 29, with serious penalties looming over him. Convictions for voluntarily causing hurt could see him behind bars for up to three years, while other charges come with various fines and prison time. Stay tuned as this shocking story unfolds.
