SINGAPORE: In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, authorities intercepted a major smuggling attempt at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Tuesday, January 14.

Officials seized over 4.6kg of cannabis along with other illegal substances, thwarting the entry of these drugs into Singapore.

Details of the Operation

The operation, carried out by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) in collaboration with the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), uncovered a staggering 4,648 grams of cannabis, accompanied by 542 grams of Ice (methamphetamine) and 250 Erimin-5 tablets.

These dangerous drugs were discovered concealed within a Malaysia-registered motorcycle operated by a 21-year-old Malaysian man.

Suspicious Discovery

During routine inspections, ICA officers noticed something suspicious and initiated further checks on the motorcycle.

They found a suspicious black bundle carefully tucked in the front fairing of the vehicle. Acting swiftly, the officers informed CNB agents, who conducted a thorough search and confirmed the presence of controlled substances hidden throughout various sections of the motorcycle.

Street Value and Impact

The total street value of the confiscated drugs was estimated to exceed S$169,000 (approximately US$123,500), enough to sustain the addiction of around 970 individuals for a week, according to authorities.

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

The young man riding the motorcycle was promptly arrested, and investigations into his activities are currently ongoing.

Importance of Border Security

Officials reiterated the critical role of border security in protecting Singapore from drug-related crimes and emphasized their commitment to conducting rigorous checks to prevent not just drug smuggling, but also the entry of undesirable individuals, weapons, and explosives.
