SINGAPORE – In a surprising return to the public eye, former Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) Syed Harun Alhabsyi was seen in Nee Soon GRC on March 27, marking his first appearance since stepping down from his parliamentary post.
Dr. Syed Harun, a 39-year-old psychiatrist known for his advocacy in mental health issues, was joined by prominent figures including Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam and several current MPs from Nee Soon GRC during a visit to the former Northview Secondary School. This school is temporarily serving as a prayer site while its neighboring Darul Makmur Mosque undergoes essential upgrading.
Among the new faces from the People's Action Party (PAP) present at the gathering were Deryne Sim, a 40-year-old intellectual property lawyer, along with Ms. Lee Hui Ying and Mr. Jackson Lam, both seasoned political figures. Lam recently stepped down as the PAP branch chairman in Hougang SMC just a month earlier.
Dr. Syed Harun and lawyer Raj Joshua Thomas made headlines earlier this year when they became the first NMPs in history to resign before completing their term. Appointed in July 2023, they had approximately a year remaining on their 2.5-year terms before their shocking resignations on February 14th. Their departure sparked widespread speculation about their intentions to contest in the upcoming general election, which is expected to be held by November.
In a heartfelt Facebook post announcing his resignation, Dr. Syed Harun expressed his intention to explore new opportunities for political service, indicating a desire to remain involved in the political landscape of Singapore.
During his sighting on March 27, Dr. Syed Harun engaged in conversations with Minister Shanmugam and other MPs from the Nee Soon GRC, which included Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Carrie Tan, and Derrick Goh, further fueling speculation about his potential return to the political arena.
Interestingly, fellow Nee Soon GRC MP Louis Ng was absent from the event, prompting discussion among observers about the dynamics within the group.
As the political landscape in Singapore continues to evolve, many are eager to see if Dr. Syed Harun will re-enter the fray, potentially making waves in the upcoming elections. Will he join the ranks of established leaders or forge a new path in his political journey? Only time will tell!
