In a bold move, Russia is calling on Poland to lift its recent closure of the border with Belarus, an ally of Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry described the closure as "destructive" and warned of potential repercussions.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made the announcement regarding the border lockdown, which took effect at midnight on September 12, in response to upcoming joint military exercises between Russia and Belarus.

Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for Russia's Foreign Ministry, urged Warsaw to reconsider its decision, suggesting that it would only escalate tensions in an already volatile region of Europe. Zakharova pointed out that this closure was a tactic to justify heightened military alertness among NATO's eastern members.

Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia have been bracing for the joint military drills, dubbed Zapad, which are set to simulate a potential occupation of the strategically vital Suwalki corridor, further elevating concerns in the region.

Traditionally held every four years, the 2025 edition of these exercises is particularly significant as it marks the first iteration amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine. Initial reports indicated that around 13,000 troops would participate, but recent updates suggest that number may be halved.

Zakharova accused Poland of ignoring goodwill gestures from Moscow and Minsk, which included proposals to shift the exercises away from the border and cut down troop numbers, further complicating diplomatic relations.
