Honda’s EV Revolution Begins with the Acura RSX
In an exciting announcement, Honda confirmed that the Acura RSX will mark the company's entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market with its very own platform, set to hit the streets in 2026. The highly-anticipated RSX will not only reinvigorate a beloved name but will also pioneer Honda's proprietary Asimo operating system.
Acura RSX Development and Platform
The Acura RSX, which is currently in development and shrouded in camouflage, is derived from the innovative Performance concept unveiled last year. This thrilling new model will be built on Honda’s all-new vehicle platform, steering the company away from relying on technologies from other automakers, such as the General Motors’ Ultium platform that underpins Honda's existing Prologue and Acura ZDX models.
RSX Production at New Factory
Production of the RSX will take place at Honda's cutting-edge factory in Ohio, a $4.4 billion joint venture with LG Chem, a notable player in battery technology. This plant is expected to commence operations in late 2025, marking a significant step for Honda as it pivots towards manufacturing its own EVs.
The Revival of the RSX Badge
The revival of the RSX badge—a homage to the performance variant of the Honda Integra from the early 2000s—is emblematic of Honda's strategic shift towards electrification and performance. This is aligned with Honda’s commitment to rolling out sporty hybrids, as demonstrated by the return of the iconic Prelude.
Leadership Insight on Performance
Lance Woelfer, Vice President of automobile sales at American Honda Motor Co., stated, 'In RSX, we turn to an Acura nameplate that communicates fun to drive performance—a great name for a sporty SUV with a coupe silhouette for our first original Acura EV.'
Introduction of the Asimo Operating System
Notably, the RSX will debut Honda's in-house-developed Asimo OS. Recently showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), this operating system is pivotal in Honda's vision for software-defined vehicles, allowing for ongoing software updates that enhance vehicle functionality. Named after Honda's beloved Asimo humanoid robot, which retired in 2018, the Asimo OS reflects Honda's innovative spirit. This operating system will also form the backbone of Honda's upcoming zero-emission vehicles, with the Honda 0 SUV being the first of its kind.
Statement from Honda's Communications VP
Jessica Fini, Assistant VP for communications at Honda, emphasized the significance of this venture: 'So it works out that Acura is once again, sort of the tip of the spear for electrification and our digital future.'
A New Benchmark in the EV Landscape
As automotive fans eagerly await further developments, the Acura RSX stands to set new benchmarks in the EV landscape, combining thrilling performance with state-of-the-art technology. Could this be the electric sports vehicle that fans have been waiting for? Stay tuned for more updates!
