What to Do If You Get Bitten or Scratched!
Whether you're bitten or scratched by your pet, a stray, or a wild animal, it's essential to act fast! Follow these critical steps to ensure your safety:
1. **Clean the Wound Immediately:** Rinse the area with soap and warm water for at least 15 minutes. This is a vital first step!
2. **Seek Medical Help:** If the wound is deep, bleeding, or starting to show symptoms like swelling or redness, head to an urgent care center or the nearest hospital emergency department without delay.
3. **For Minor Wounds:** If the bite or scratch isn’t severe and shows no signs of infection, reach out to your healthcare provider or visit a walk-in clinic.
Don’t Forget to Report It!
It’s not just about your health! Report the incident to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) at 519-258-2146 ext. 4475. If it’s outside of regular hours or on a holiday, call 519-973-4510 to get the guidance you need.
