In the world of UFC, few debates can ignite passion quite like the pound-for-pound champion conversation. Recently, UFC 316 headliner Sean O'Malley stirred the pot by declaring that there’s more than one man at the top of this prestigious list.
The spotlight has primarily shone on Islam Makhachev and Jon Jones in recent years. While Makhachev has maintained a formidable presence as the dominant lightweight champion, UFC president Dana White initially favored Jones as the pound-for-pound king. However, in a surprising twist during UFC 311 in January, White reversed his stance in favor of Makhachev after his impressive win over Renato Moicano.
Despite this shakeup, many fans believe Makhachev’s grip on the title has solidified, especially as Jones has defended his heavyweight title just once in two years and is rumored to be considering retirement.
But O'Malley disagrees. He recently appeared on MightyCast with former champion Demetrious Johnson, where in addition to discussing his rematch with Merab Dvalishvili, he made waves by equating rising star Ilia Topuria with Makhachev in the pound-for-pound rankings.
O'Malley shared his thoughts: I can definitely envision Ilia going up against Islam. That's the kind of fight that gives off a big fight vibe. To me, both guys are tied for the number one spot in terms of pound-for-pound best in the world.
Currently, Topuria is just two ranks below Makhachev in the official UFC rankings, sitting comfortably in the top three. His meteoric rise includes a stunning knockout of Alexander Volkanovski, claiming the featherweight championship, and a decisive victory against Max Holloway, firmly solidifying his elite status.
However, to become the undisputed pound-for-pound champion, Topuria will first need to surpass Jones, who hasn’t had a strong title defense since defeating Ciryl Gane in 2023.
Fans are eagerly awaiting Topuria’s next challenge, which will take place at UFC 317 on June 28. He’s set to headline International Fight Week as he competes for the vacant lightweight title against veteran contender Charles Oliveira.
Meanwhile, Makhachev is poised for his own high-stakes match later this year, aiming to further solidify his claim to the crown as he challenges for Jack Della Maddalena’s welterweight title. The excitement is building, and the stakes couldn’t be higher!
