Measles Cases on the Rise in Northern B.C.

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The latest update from the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has sent shockwaves through Northern Health, revealing a new measles case, bringing the region's total to a staggering 143 confirmed cases this year!

The Alarming Stats

This recent case is a small but concerning increase from the previous update on August 18th. With 197 confirmed cases across British Columbia, a whopping 72% are concentrated in the Northern Health region. The numbers are climbing steadily, with the potential for further outbreaks looming.

Potential Risk Factors

Northern Health is also monitoring 16 'probable' cases—individuals showing symptoms who have traveled to areas known for measles activity. Lab results are pending. Meanwhile, other health regions in B.C. report significantly lower numbers: Fraser Health with 24 cases, Interior Health 16, Vancouver Coastal Health 10, and Island Health just four.

Current Situation

As it stands, there's only one active measles case in B.C., and it's under Northern Health's watchful care. For those unfamiliar, measles is highly contagious and can lead to severe complications, including hospitalizations and, in extreme cases, death.

Measles Symptoms and Spread

The virus spreads through direct contact and airborne transmission—think coughing, sneezing, or even just breathing around an infected person. Symptoms typically emerge between one to three weeks post-infection and include fever, coughing, runny nose, and sensitive, red eyes. This is often followed by a distinct rash that starts on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.

Important Warning!

This week, Northern Health issued a crucial alert for anyone who visited the Fort St. John Hospital's emergency department on August 18th from 1:50 PM to 4:20 PM. Individuals in that timeframe may have been exposed to the virus and should be vigilant.

Stay Safe!

If you suspect you could have contracted measles, it's essential to contact your healthcare provider. Ensure to call ahead so precautions can be taken to protect other patients in the waiting area. Stay informed and stay safe!
