The Significance of the Mission Patch

While it might seem like a small milestone compared to other achievements, the release of the Artemis 2 mission patch symbolizes a pivotal moment in humanity's quest to return to the lunar surface. The crew for Artemis 2 includes astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. They will be the first individuals to journey aboard NASA's Orion spacecraft, launched atop the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which is currently being assembled within the VAB.

Magnitude of the Projection

Projecting the patch was significantly simpler and faster than the extensive process of painting the NASA emblem, which previously required a staggering 700 gallons of red, white, and blue paint.

Behind the Scenes of the VAB

Inside High Bay 3 of the VAB, preparations for the Artemis 2 mission are in full swing. The core stage of the SLS rocket has been securely mated with side-mounted solid rocket boosters, ready for pre-launch tests on a mobile launch platform. The next step involves lifting and securing the launch vehicle stage adapter atop the core stage.

Following this, NASA will integrate the interim cryogenic propulsion stage, Orion stage adapter, and finally, the Orion spacecraft into the launch stack, completing the configuration for the SLS.
