In a striking shift, over half of Canadians owning property in the United States are contemplating selling their homes within the year, largely driven by the contentious economic policies of the Trump administration. Recent findings from a Royal LePage survey reveal that a staggering 54% of these Canadian property owners are ready to make a change.
Phil Soper, CEO of Royal LePage, emphasized the significance of these numbers, particularly as around 1 million Canadian snowbirds flock to the U.S. annually, with more than 60% of them owning property. That’s a notable portion of the Canadian real estate market, Soper explained in an interview with BNNBloomberg.ca.
Political Climate Fuels Selling Decisions
The survey indicates that nearly two-thirds (62%) of those considering a sale cite concerns about the current U.S. political climate as a primary motivator. Additionally, a portion of respondents expresses personal financial reasons (33%), while 5% point to worries about extreme weather events like hurricanes and wildfires.
Soper observed, Most Canadians view this period in American politics as extreme, with a belief that the pendulum will eventually swing back to a more moderate approach. However, with Trump only six months into his term, uncertainty looms on the future direction of U.S. policies.
