The dream for a safe and scenic pathway linking Winkler and Morden is transforming into reality as crews lay fresh blacktop on the Stanley Community Pathway. This ambitious 10-kilometre corridor aims to unite neighbors, families, and friends across municipal boundaries, and now construction is underway!

A Vision Years in the Making

James Friesen, Chair of the Stanley Pathway Committee, has been a passionate advocate for this project, linking back to the Stanley Trail Association's efforts in 2000 to connect with the Trans Canada Trail. After years of planning and teamwork, the vision is finally being realized.

Persistence Pays Off

After five years of monthly meetings involving local leaders, engineers, and community members, the pathway is on track. While navigating the challenges of utilities, drainage, and safety alongside a busy highway wasn't easy, Friesen stated confidently, "It’s being built." As autumn temperatures allow, paving is progressing, with expectations for completion possibly by October.

A Call for Patience

Until the grand opening, residents are urged to avoid the construction zone. "We appreciate the enthusiasm, but let’s wait for the ribbon-cutting, please," Friesen emphasized.

Connecting Communities Beyond a Path

This pathway is more than just a route—it's a symbol of reconnection. During the pandemic, the committee realized how a physical path could bridge the gap between people. Friesen noted, "Connecting through walking or biking allows for more genuine interactions compared to passing someone in a car." Plans for a welcoming rest area near Boundary Trails Health Centre aim to promote community wellness and activity.

Fundraising Success: Help Us Cross the Finish Line

Thanks to extensive fundraising efforts, about 75% of the project’s estimated $4.3 to $4.5 million cost is already secured through grants and donations. With around $3.6 million raised so far, the Winkler and Morden community foundations are stepping up to match public donations dollar-for-dollar up to a combined $50,000. This means every little contribution counts!

A Pathway with National Significance

This trail is not just for local residents; it will also become part of the Trans Canada Trail, linking our small community to a national story. This intersection of local and continental narratives showcases the importance of community-driven projects.

Celebrating Unity and Progress

Friesen reminds us that such projects require collective effort: volunteers, businesses, councils, and families all play essential roles. As the ribbon falls and the community takes its first steps down the new trail, it promises to be more than just an opening—it will be a celebration of unity and togetherness.
