Former National Security Adviser John Bolton is firing shots at his old boss, Donald Trump, particularly targeting Trump's seeming obsession with clinching a Nobel Peace Prize. In a series of pointed posts on social media, Bolton criticized Trump’s foreign policy strategy, especially regarding Ukraine, just days after the FBI executed a raid on his home and office.
Bolton didn’t hold back, stating, "Trump's negotiations are collapsing in confusion, and so too may be his hopes for a Nobel Peace Prize." He linked to a searing op-ed in the Washington Examiner, which accused Trump of undermining diplomatic efforts and alienating allies, all while racing toward a poorly conceived deal with Russia.
"What he’s attempted in the last couple of weeks might have actually pushed us further away from peace regarding Ukraine," Bolton asserted, emphasizing that the damage to bilateral relationships is significant and lasting.
Interestingly, the FBI raid that set the political stage for Bolton’s remarks is part of a national security probe into classified documents, a situation that has previously dogged Bolton following the 2020 release of his book, 'The Room Where It Happened.' Still, with a target on his back, Bolton’s critiques of Trump's foreign strategies remain sharp.
The White House chimed in on Bolton's critiques without directly addressing them, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously dismissing Bolton as a disgraced figure in the media who somehow thinks he knows better than Trump. Leavitt pointed to Trump’s supposed successes in resolving multiple global conflicts within months.
It’s common knowledge that Trump’s push for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine may be driven by his yearning for accolades like the Nobel Peace Prize. Trump, ever the boastful figure, claims he’s ended several conflicts since stepping back into office, including a peace agreement in the Caucasus region and easing tensions between India and Pakistan.
In June, Trump voiced his frustrations on social media, claiming he wouldn’t receive a Nobel Prize "no matter what I do," even if he were to resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Furthermore, reports have surfaced alleging that Trump contacted NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for a Peace Prize nomination right before meeting with Vladimir Putin.
To date, only four U.S. presidents have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, including Trump's frequent rival Barack Obama, who received the honor in 2009.
