This concern stems from alarming findings that link these colorful, sugary treats to serious health issues, as highlighted in a recent study published in the journal *Archives of Disease in Childhood*.

The research scrutinized the cases of 21 children who fell gravely ill shortly after indulging in these popular beverages. This emerging condition, termed glycerol intoxication syndrome, manifests through a series of distressing symptoms, including a sudden drop in consciousness, drastic fluctuations in blood sugar levels, and acidosis — a dangerous buildup of acid in the bloodstream that signals potential poisoning or metabolic dysfunction.

Slushies are marketed aggressively to young audiences, often depicted as "sugar-free" or "no added sugar" options in the UK and Ireland. However, many of these drinks contain glycerol (E422), a synthetic sweetener that helps maintain the slushy texture without high sugar content. Doctors have found that the ingestion of glycerol in young children can lead to severe health crises.

The study revealed that the average age of the affected children was just 3.5 years, with ages ranging from 2 to nearly 7 years. Of the 21 cases examined, 14 children became seriously ill within an hour of drinking slushies, and around 16 experienced a concerning decline in alertness.

Good news came with the swift recovery of most children after emergency medical interventions, which included the stabilization of their blood sugar levels. Remarkably, only one child out of the 21 continued to indulge in slushies after their incident — and faced similar adverse effects when they consumed another one at age 7.

In light of these findings, the UK Food Standards Agency has issued guidelines recommending that children aged 4 and under should not consume slush drinks containing glycerol. Furthermore, they advise that children aged 10 or younger should limit their consumption to just one slushie.

However, researchers urge that these safety recommendations should be revised to reflect a threshold of 8 years. The recognized variability in children's body weight could result in dangerously high glycerol doses being administered to younger kids.

The study underscores a troubling lack of transparency regarding the glycerol concentrations in slush ice drinks, making it challenging to determine what constitutes a ‘safe’ dosage. The researchers point out that factors like the speed of ingestion, whether the drink is consumed during fasting or after exercise, and the overall dose can significantly influence health outcomes.
