Apps sideloaded from the internet are over 50 times more likely to introduce malware compared to those from the Google Play Store. Fraudsters often hide behind the veil of anonymity, posing as legitimate developers to spread malicious apps.

How Will It Work?

With this new verification system, developers will have to register, providing their official name, address, email, and phone number—akin to going through passport control at an airport. While this won't scrutinize the app content directly, it will hold developers accountable and significantly reduce identity fraud in the app economy.

Options for Developers!

For those developers who operate outside of the Play Store, a new Android Developer Console will be rolled out to help them navigate the verification process easily. Students and hobbyist developers will even have access to a tailored account type to simplify compliance. However, for Play Store developers, verification has been in place since 2023, meaning they'll continue business as usual.

The Global Perspective

And it's not just Google—Apple is also stepping up its game with similar new requirements in the EU App Store following the Digital Services Act. Developers submitting new apps or updates will need to declare their “merchant status,” ensuring a safer ecosystem across platforms.

Timeline for Implementation

The rollout of this vital security feature will happen in phases. Developers can expect early access starting October 2025, with a full launch set for March 2026. By September 2026, countries like Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand will also see these changes, with worldwide implementation by 2027.
