Metro Vancouver's Astronomical Treat

Metro Vancouver astronomers and stargazers are in for a treat as the Quadrantid meteor shower continues to dazzle – albeit faintly – in the coming days!

Insights from Rosanna Tilbrook

Rosanna Tilbrook, a seasoned astronomer at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, shared fascinating insights with V.I.A. about the meteor shower that peaked on January 3rd at approximately 8 a.m. Unfortunately, the bright morning sky likely obscured many eager viewers’ chance to see the display. However, she mentioned that around 100 meteors per hour could have been visible around 6 a.m. when the skies were darker – a time when early risers could have experienced a spectacular celestial event!

After the Peak

Though the Quadrantid meteor shower will officially continue until about January 16, witnesses should temper their expectations. “Following the peak, the rate of meteors drops significantly,” Tilbrook explains, “dropping by half within merely six hours!” In contrast, other meteor showers, like the popular Perseids in August, can offer extended viewing opportunities over several nights.

Promising Viewing Conditions

For those still hopeful to catch this cosmic display, tonight, January 6, appears to be promising! The weather forecast indicates clear skies in Metro Vancouver, a great window to grab a glimpse of shooting stars. Even on January 7, with a forecast high of 8°C and a low of 3°C, the weather will still play a crucial role. So get your binoculars ready!

Best Times to Watch

Skywatchers are encouraged to venture outdoors just before dawn when the radiant point – the origin point of the meteors – will be at its highest in the sky, potentially allowing for more meteors to shower down visually. “You could spot one or two shooting stars every couple of minutes if conditions are right,” Tilbrook assures.

Ideal Viewing Locations

For the best viewing experience, it’s essential to escape city lights. The darker the surroundings, the better the chance to enjoy the mesmerizing display. Ideal spots to watch the show include Spanish Banks, Point Grey, Burnaby Mountain, and a slightly farther option at McDonald Park.

Last Chance for this Winter Wonder

With the Quadrantid meteor shower winding down, this is your last chance to witness the remnants of this winter wonder—a breathtaking cosmic light show! Grab a blanket, find a dark spot, and don’t forget to look up! 🪐✨
