Prepare for a celestial spectacle! If you’re eager to witness the magic of shooting stars, make your way to the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory south of Penticton this August 14.

The annual Perseid Meteor Shower, one of the sky’s most dazzling displays, is in full swing. Since mid-July, stargazers have been treated to the sight of meteors igniting in the atmosphere as Earth glides through the remains of the Swift-Tuttle comet.

These shooting stars typically radiate from the Perseus constellation, peaking around mid-August, making this viewing party the perfect chance to experience this beautiful cosmic event.

The DRAO invites everyone to a FREE public viewing night, beginning at 7 p.m. Gates will open for an evening filled with enlightenment and wonder.

Expect engaging talks from noted speakers including Jeanette Merrick, Robert Embree, Dr. Mohammad Islam, and Dr. Alex Hill, who will delve into everything from the observatory's state-of-the-art equipment to the fascinating workings of the Perseid meteor shower.

Plus, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's Okanagan Centre branch will be on hand with optical telescopes, enhancing your stargazing experience!

Don’t forget to dress warmly and bring a blanket or a lawn chair for the utmost comfort while you soak in the night sky.

Important: To protect the sensitive work of the observatory, please ensure all electronic devices—including cell phones, laptops, and smartwatches—are completely turned off. Airplane mode won't cut it!
