Breaking News: Measles Outbreak in Northern Health

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. — The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has just confirmed seven new cases of measles in the Northern Health area, raising the alarming total from 181 to 188 confirmed cases in the region as of September 11th.

As it stands, Northern Health accounts for a staggering 73% of 257 total confirmed measles cases across the province. Meanwhile, there's still no change in the count of probable cases, which remains at 18—17 of these from Northern Health. This brings the potential total case count for the year to a concerning 275.

Current Situation: Active Cases in Decline

Encouragingly, the number of active cases has dropped significantly—now only two, one in Northern Health and another in the Fraser Health area. This is a sharp decrease from seven active cases reported earlier this week.

Know the Symptoms: What to Look Out For

Measles symptoms can begin as early as 7 to 21 days after exposure and typically start with fever, cough, runny nose, and red, sensitive eyes. The rash, a hallmark of the virus, usually appears on the face and neck before spreading to the rest of the body over a span of four to seven days. Severe cases can lead to dire complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis, which can be fatal.

Recent Exposure Alert!

Attention Northern B.C. residents! Late last month, a new potential exposure to measles was reported at the Fort St. John Hospital's emergency room during a window from 9 p.m. on August 28th to 1 a.m. on August 29th. Those who believe they may have symptoms or have been exposed are strongly urged to reach out to their healthcare provider for testing.
