SINGAPORE – The World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2024, held from November 6 to 8 at Marina Bay Sands, has once again showcased the brilliance of global architectural design.

This year's theme brings together a stunning array of innovative projects, including the remarkable transformation of Singapore's Changi Airport Terminal 2 into a nature-inspired haven, highlighting architecture's potential to enrich our built environment through sustainability and creativity.

WAF 2024 Overview

WAF, recognized as the largest architecture festival in the world, featured live judging and an impressive lineup of emerging architects alongside renowned industry leaders.

This year, over 480 cutting-edge designs from approximately 350 firms across 71 countries were shortlisted.

Leading the pack, China dominated with 50 firms, followed by the United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, and India.

Awards and Special Prizes

On the festival's final day, the winners in 42 award categories will compete for prestigious accolades such as World Building of the Year, Interior of the Year, Future Project of the Year, and Landscape of the Year.

Additionally, the event also acknowledges eight special prizes that focus on innovative designs tackling significant global challenges, such as the Grohe Water Prize and Rockwool Sustainability Prize.

Knowledge Exchange and Networking

WAF goes beyond awards—it's a hub for knowledge exchange.

Attendees benefited from insightful talks featuring influential figures in architecture and urban design.

Alongside, a series of fringe events were organized throughout Singapore, creating additional opportunities for delegates to network and collaborate while exploring the city's architectural landscape.

Judging Panel and Festival Background

The judging panel comprised 153 esteemed professionals from 32 countries.

Notable names include Kelley Cheng, Sanjay Puri, and the famed Sir Peter Cook.

Founded in 2008 by British design journalist Paul Finch, WAF has evolved significantly over its 17 editions, previously taking place mainly in European cities.

After a nearly decade-long hiatus, it returned to Singapore in 2023, drawing more than 1,800 attendees and reinforcing the city-state's status as a critical global player in architecture.

Innovative Solutions and Environmental Focus

The shortlisted projects, announced in July, reflect innovative solutions across 42 categories, with significant emphasis on carbon-neutral designs that integrate nature into built environments.

Finch expressed his excitement about returning to Singapore, highlighting the city’s dynamic approach to urban development since gaining independence in 1965.

Inspirational Quotes and Future Vision

"Even after 17 years, the creative energy at WAF continues to inspire and astonish," Finch noted.

"The live presentations by architects shed light on their design philosophies, paving the way for influential conversations that shape the future of architecture."

Participants like Cate Cowlishaw, HDR's regional managing principal, emphasized the value of understanding diverse perspectives from around the globe.

"WAF is an incredible venue for architects to share knowledge, elevate their craft, and confront the pressing issues we face today," she remarked.

Another judge, Michael Heenan from AJC Architects, stressed the critical dialogue taking place at the festival.

He remarked, “The urgency to address climate change has never been more palpable, and projects presented at WAF are central to finding sustainable solutions.”

Heenan envisions a future where technology will revolutionize architecture’s response to climate challenges, "Imagine a world where unlimited, free green energy shapes our landscapes."

Looking Ahead

As the festival continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainability and innovation, architectural enthusiasts await the announcement of the 2024 winners.

Among the top contenders for completed buildings is the iconic Changi Airport Terminal 2, representing the best of design excellence in the built environment.
