Urgent Bird Flu Crisis in Norfolk: All Birds Ordered Indoors!

In an alarming development, the UK government has declared a mandatory bird flu prevention zone throughout Norfolk as outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza continue to escalate. This move comes after several confirmed cases have been identified in local poultry and captive birds across numerous farms in the area.

As of midday on Monday, December 23, bird keepers within Norfolk will be compelled to house their birds indoors to safeguard them against the lurking threat of infection. This stringent measure is part of a broader strategy to combat the growing epidemic, which has already prompted the culling of thousands of Christmas turkeys at a farm near Watton following the initial detection of bird flu in the county on December 6.

The situation is dire, with further outbreaks reported at multiple commercial poultry farms. So far, the total count of confirmed cases in Norfolk has risen to eight, with similar prevention zones now established in Suffolk, Lincolnshire, and parts of East Riding of Yorkshire and Kingston upon Hull.

Chief Veterinary Officer Christine Middlemiss emphasized the urgency of the situation, urging bird keepers to strictly comply with biosecurity measures, including disinfecting clothing and equipment, minimizing site visits, and reporting any signs of illness. "We are witnessing a worrying rise in bird flu cases on farms and among backyard birds, and immediate action is vital to prevent further spread," she stated.

Bird keepers are also reminded to report any suspicions of disease directly to the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) at 03000 200 301.
