A Major Honor for a Nanochemistry Pioneer

The prestigious American Chemical Society has unveiled the first-ever Dong Qin ACS Award in Nanochemistry, and the illustrious recipient is none other than Luis M. Liz-Marzán! Renowned for his groundbreaking work in the colloidal synthesis of metal nanoparticles, Liz-Marzán is set to receive $5,000, a certificate, and reimbursement for travel expenses to the ACS Spring 2026 conference where the award will be presented.

A Leader in Science and Community

Currently serving as an Ikerbasque Research Professor and scientific director at the Center for Cooperative Research in Biomaterials (CIC biomaGUNE), Liz-Marzán is a principal investigator within the Biomedical Research Networking Center in Bioengineering, Biomaterials, and Nanomedicine. His influence extends further as he also holds a part-time chair at the University of Vigo since 2022.

John Rogers, also inspired by Qin, fondly recalls their collaborative research, highlighting her energetic approach and optimistic outlook on life. Their early-morning experiments at MIT forged lasting memories, where Dong’s vivacity contrasted with her husband Younan Xia's reserved demeanor.

A Stellar Career in Nanotechnology

Dong Qin made significant strides in materials science, particularly in the synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals. Her innovative techniques advanced the understanding of how to develop effective nanomaterials with tailored properties. "Dong's work transformed the often empirical art of nanocrystal growth into a precise science," remarks Peidong Yang, a leading chemist at UC Berkeley.

A Passionate Mentor and Gourmet Chef

Beyond her scientific achievements, Qin was admired for her mentorship and exceptional teaching skills. A recipient of multiple awards from Georgia Tech, she balanced her professional life with a love for cooking. Friends fondly recall her delicious tofu-mushroom stir-fry, a dish that brought joy to countless gatherings. Her generosity at social events, such as hosting barbecues while accommodating dietary preferences, exemplified her character.

A Lasting Legacy

Dong Qin leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and camaraderie, remembered not just for her contributions to science but also for her warmth and approachability as a mentor and friend. She is survived by her husband Younan Xia, her mother, Qike Zheng, and her sister, Fawn Wang.
