Tragic Accident Claims Life of Friend as Bak Kut Teh Restaurant Founder Faces Heavy Fine

2024-09-27

SINGAPORE – A Heartbreaking Incident

In a heartbreaking incident that has rattled the local community, Ng Siak Hai, the 88-year-old founder of the famed Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh restaurant, has been handed a hefty fine of $14,000 after pleading guilty to causing a fatal traffic accident in 2022. The tragedy unfolded during an outing with friends, leading to the loss of one life and severe injuries to another.

Details of the Accident

On September 27, 2023, Ng was sentenced after it was revealed that he lost control of his vehicle while driving due to feeling light-headed. The horrific crash occurred while he was driving along the Central Expressway (CTE) towards Bukit Timah Road, ultimately causing his blue Mercedes-Benz to overturn after hitting a tree.

Among the passengers were Ng's friends, Ng Thit Hung, 72, who succumbed to heart disease following the accident, and Mr. Tan Teck Soon, 76, who suffered serious injuries, including a heart-related issue and a severe gash to his head. After the accident, Ng himself was hospitalized for bruising.

Purpose of the Trip

The group was en route from their Teochew association’s headquarters to a food-tasting event at Orchard Hotel, celebrating the impending 58th anniversary dinner of the Teo Ann Huay Kuan association, where Ng served as chairman.

Health Considerations

Deputy Public Prosecutor Natalie Chu highlighted that while Ng was known to suffer from diabetes and other health complications, doctors could not confirm if he experienced a hypoglycemic episode that contributed to the accident. Hypoglycemia can cause drowsiness and fatigue, posing significant driving risks.

Court's Decision

Responding to the incident’s circumstances, the judge took into account Ng's deteriorating health status, which includes end-stage renal failure requiring him to undergo dialysis three times a week. Therefore, rather than imposing a prison sentence—which is usually the standard in such cases—the court opted for financial penalties.

While the prosecution sought maximum fines for Ng's actions, the defense argued for leniency due to his advanced age and medical conditions. They contended that his lapse in judgment was a momentary issue rather than a reflection of reckless behavior.

Sentencing Terms

As part of his sentencing, Ng is banned from holding or obtaining any driving license for a period of eight years.

Community Response

This unfortunate event highlights the pressing need for improved road safety awareness, especially among elderly drivers whose medical conditions can sometimes compromise their ability to navigate the roads safely. The community mourns the loss while grappling with the aftermath of a tragic event that serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with driving.
