BANGKOK: In an exciting development for motorsport enthusiasts, Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra engaged in discussions with Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali on March 18, expressing the government's intention to explore the possibility of hosting a Grand Prix on the streets of Bangkok by 2028.

While the global Formula 1 calendar currently features an extensive roster of 24 races—including four in the Asia-Pacific region, such as the highly popular Singapore Grand Prix—Thailand aims to carve out its own niche in this elite racing series.

The nation already boasts an FIA-accredited racing circuit in Buriram, famed for hosting the MotoGP World Championships, yet Prime Minister Paetongtarn's vision is distinctly focused on a thrilling street race in the heart of the capital. The proposed initiative not only highlights Thailand's ambition to join the ranks of premier motorsport venues but also serves as a catalyst for urban development.

“We had a productive discussion regarding Thailand's potential as a host for a Formula 1 race,” the Prime Minister shared on social media platform X following her meeting with Domenicali. She emphasized that a detailed feasibility study will be undertaken to evaluate the race route, investment requirements, and the overall benefits that Thailand could gain from this major sporting event.
