Get Ready for a Celestial Show!

Tonight, August 28, is the perfect opportunity for stargazers as the elusive Comet C/2024 E1, known as Wierzchoś, makes its grand appearance! This comet will glide just under 0.5° from the 5.4 magnitude star, Lambda (λ) Coronae Borealis, lighting up the western sky.

Prepare for a Thrilling Hunt!

Although Wierzchoś shines dimly at a magnitude of 15, don’t let that discourage you! To catch a glimpse, you'll need a big telescope and a dark sky away from city lights. The best time to observe will be around 10 PM local daylight time, when the comet will be about 50° high in the sky.

Where to Look!

Locate the stunning Corona Borealis, a beautiful arc hovering over Boötes the Herdsman, with the bright star Arcturus as your guide. Wierzchoś will be positioned in the lesser-known area of northern Corona Borealis, just west of the star Eta Herculis.

Tracking the Comet!

Tonight, Wierzchoś resides about 18’ northwest of Lambda, so once you find this guiding star, the comet should be in your viewfinder — adjust the magnification to lock onto its serene glow! Don’t miss out, as tomorrow night, the comet will have shifted slightly southwest, maintaining the same distant relationship with Lambda.
