SINGAPORE – After an uphill battle filled with unexpected hurdles, the team behind the much-anticipated Singaporean science-fiction comedy 'We Can Save The World!!!' is thrilled to announce that their film will open in theaters on September 18. Thanks to partnerships with boutique cinema EagleWings Cinematics and major chains Golden Village and Shaw Theatres, audiences can now secure their tickets!
The film’s journey to the big screen has been anything but smooth. Initially slated for release at indie cinema The Projector, the team faced a major setback when the venue abruptly closed its doors just weeks before the film was set to premiere.
Producer Martin Loh revealed that their situation worsened when talks with Cathay Cineplexes fell through due to another unexpected closure. "We woke up one Monday morning to the news that Cathay had ceased operations as well," he shared with The Straits Times.
However, a turning point arrived when local media coverage highlighted their struggles. Loh noted, "After the article was published, several local businesses reached out to us, eager to help. It was a heartening response that came at just the right time." Educational institutions like Nanyang Technological University (NTU) offered their venues for screenings, showcasing the community's support.
Writer-director Cheng Chai Hong expressed gratitude for the media attention, saying that it helped bridge the credibility gap with larger exhibitors like Shaw Theatres and Golden Village. "It’s understandable that they were hesitant; this is my first film. But the validation from the media opened doors for us."
Notably, 'We Can Save The World!!!' premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival on July 17 and stands out as a project created without assistance from major production houses or government funding. With a predominantly English dialogue featuring a sprinkle of Singlish, the film's unique cultural approach aims to resonate with a wider Singaporean audience.
The story follows Ryan, portrayed by Noah Yap, a disillusioned government employee who meets Peng, a seemingly ordinary man with claims of extraterrestrial origins. Their journey catches the attention of secret government operatives, leading to an adventure that intertwines with a mysterious cult.
Cheng emphasized his vision: "This isn't an art-house film; it's meant to entertain everyone, from uncles and aunties to millennials and Gen Z. Our goal is to craft a story that speaks to the Singaporean experience, making it accessible to all, regardless of language background."
As the release date approaches, Cheng reflects on the challenges they faced, expressing his relief and gratitude: "We're thankful that so many people took a chance on us. In this ever-evolving film landscape, it’s crucial for our generation to carve out our own path while honoring the legacy of those who came before us."
