SINGAPORE – In response to soaring global cost-of-living challenges, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the government's commitment to provide additional support for Singaporeans during his recent visit to Aljunied GRC on March 23. This visit marks his first since taking on the country’s leadership, illustrating his dedication to engaging directly with communities.
"Cost of living is a significant concern for our residents," PM Wong stated, highlighting the range of measures implemented in this year’s Budget to alleviate financial pressures faced by citizens. He pointed out that while countries around the world are grappling with similar issues, Singapore stands out for its collaborative spirit, poised to confront these challenges together.
Addressing seniors at a community event held at Kovan Hub, PM Wong took the opportunity to elaborate on financial support for citizens. He announced that senior couples over 60 years old would receive $2,400 from the combined CDC and SG60 vouchers. The distribution aims to aid with essential expenses, with each couple entitled to $800 in SG60 vouchers alongside $800 in CDC vouchers, scheduled for rollout in May 2025 and January 2026.
"We hope these additional funds will ease some of your cost-of-living pressures," he remarked with optimism.
The event not only focused on financial relief but also promoted digital literacy among seniors, encouraging active lifestyles through sports. PM Wong also celebrated local talent by awarding prizes for a photo contest and contributed to a time capsule commemorating SG60, with residents donating 60 culturally significant items.
Grassroots leaders, including Ms. Chan Hui Yuh and Mr. Victor Lye, rallied support for initiatives aimed at improving digital skills among seniors. The Digital For Life movement, an initiative under the Infocomm Media Development Authority, has established free digital clubs across 40 community centers, currently boasting over 3,000 members eager to embrace technology.
Notably, Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC were captured by the opposition Workers’ Party in the last election, a point that underscores the significance of PM Wong's engagement in these areas. Following the event, he took time to mingle with residents in nearby coffee shops, demonstrating his commitment to accessibility and connection with the public.
Resident David Choi, 45, who spoke with PM Wong alongside his 80-year-old mother, expressed approval of the budget measures, citing how the CDC and SG60 vouchers would alleviate grocery costs:
"The government's support through these vouchers will definitely help my retired mother manage her day-to-day expenses better," he remarked.
As Singaporean households face the increasing pressures of everyday expenses, these initiatives represent a proactive approach to foster resilience and solidarity within the community. The government’s commitment to supporting its citizens during these challenging times has never been more critical, as more people across the globe join in the economic struggle.
