
Singapore Launches Initiative to Enhance Integration of Foreign Professionals Into Society

SINGAPORE: In a pivotal move to foster a more inclusive environment, a new public-private initiative has been established to enhance the integration of foreign professionals into Singapore's workplaces and communities. This effort, known as the Alliance for Action (AfA), was announced during a parliamentary session by Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY), Alvin Tan.
The Alliance for Action brings together stakeholders from various sectors, including representatives from the MCCY, the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF), and the Singapore Business Federation. Its primary mandate is to devise actionable recommendations that pave the way for smoother integration of foreign talent.
Scheduled to operate from February to September this year, the AfA aims to present its findings and proposals in the latter half of 2023. Co-chaired by Alvin Tan and SNEF honorary treasurer Marcus Lam, this initiative also encompasses diverse corporate leaders and Trade Associations and Chambers (TACs) from different industries.
In preparation for this initiative, the AfA has actively engaged with corporate leaders, middle management, and employees to gather insights and opinions on how to better assimilate foreign professionals into the local workforce.
While foreign professionals contribute to the economy with their skills and international perspectives, concerns regarding competition for jobs and the preservation of Singapore's national identity have prompted this necessary dialogue. The MCCY emphasizes that fostering understanding and appreciation of both local and foreign cultural norms is essential to building a cohesive society.
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong previously underscored the importance of supporting immigrants and foreign workers in adapting to Singaporean social norms. Recognizing that Singapore's workforce heavily relies on foreign talent to maintain its economic competitiveness, Lee stressed the necessity of managing their integration thoughtfully and sensitively.
Preliminary suggestions from the AfA include enhanced support for foreign professionals to engage with local communities beyond just workplace interactions. Initiatives such as corporate volunteering programs and orientation sessions are being proposed to familiarize foreign workers with local customs and values.
Furthermore, the discussions have highlighted the need for strong human resources practices within companies that promote equal opportunities for all employees. As Mr. Tan noted, companies are committed to creating inclusive workplace environments that encourage positive interactions among their staff.
Both local employers and foreign professionals are eager to build strong relationships and adapt seamlessly to Singapore's unique cultural landscape. This collaborative effort aims not just to enhance workplace dynamics, but also to weave foreign professionals into the very fabric of Singaporean society.
