SINGAPORE: Every morning, retiree Betty Goh makes her daily pilgrimage to the Ang Mo Kio Public Library, just two bus stops from her home. As she enjoys her routine of flipping through newspapers and immersing herself in books, the thought of change looms large.

By 2026, this beloved library will relocate to the bustling AMK Hub, confirmed by the National Library Board (NLB) on July 1, leaving regulars like Ms. Goh pondering the impact of this move.

"I love the current vibe! It’s relatively quiet and spacious, which makes it perfect for enjoying my reading sessions," Ms. Goh expressed in Mandarin. However, she's anxious about the potential crowding in the new mall setting.

Unfortunately, the NLB hasn’t revealed the new library's size, leaving patrons speculating about whether it will be an inviting nook or a snug corner.

Established in 1985 and refurbished in 2003, Ang Mo Kio Public Library has become a beloved institution for many in the area. The NLB promises a more accessible location at AMK Hub, benefitting from direct connections to the Ang Mo Kio MRT station and bus interchange.

The new library will feature towering bookshelves and design elements inspired by local landmarks, ensuring a unique experience for visitors.

Patrons won’t have to worry just yet, as the library will continue operating as usual until the move, boasting 50 tables, benches, and cozy reading spots.

During a recent visit, the library was buzzing with activity—half of the tables were occupied, and various multimedia stations saw use from patrons of various ages.

Seventy-one-year-old Vincent Ong was caught off guard by the relocation news. A regular who enjoys reading newspapers and conducting research, he expressed concerns about the size at AMK Hub. "Unless they put it on the top floor where the cinema was, I can't imagine how cramped it will be," he said.

Mr. Ong also noted that while the existing library may seem dated, its accessibility has been key for him. He lamented that while other libraries boast more resources and multiple copies of popular titles, Ang Mo Kio often has just one.

Despite his reservations, he plans to adapt: "This is part of my daily routine now. I need to adjust because it has become my hobby. I come here every day to unwind."

Interestingly, the library experiences a surge in visitors during exam times and school holidays, particularly as families and preschool teachers flock to its doors.

For housewife Elaine Yeo, the new AMK Hub site may even offer greater convenience as she often borrows books for her young grandson. While occasionally visiting with him, she also takes trips solo or with her husband.

"Even if it gets a bit smaller, what's most important is having a library nearby! Convenience is everything in Singapore," she said.
