2024-09-30

SINGAPORE: A Deadly Altercation on Verdun Road

In a dramatic escalation of events following a deadly altercation on Verdun Road near Farrer Park, three men have been charged anew for allegedly using dangerous weapons to inflict harm. This latest development, announced on Monday (September 30), comes after a 25-year-old victim, Dhinessh Vasie, lost his life, and two others sustained injuries during the brutal fight that took place around 4 AM on September 22.

Charges and Allegations

The new charges detail a shocking use of everyday objects—specifically chairs—identified as lethal weapons capable of causing death. The latest allegations specify that Kirrthik Roshan Prem Ananth, 22, has been charged with two counts of voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon. His accomplices—23-year-old Satish Jason Prabahas and 20-year-old Pradave Shashi Kumar—face similar charges.

Details of the Incident

This trio is among six individuals, comprising four men and two women aged from 20 to 24, who were originally arrested following the tragic incident that unfolded at Kim San Leng Eating House and a nearby alley. The other suspects, including the two women, Nur Diyana Harun Al Rasheed and Kasthuri Kallidas Marimuthu, are facing charges related to rioting.

Reconstruction of Events

Key details from the new accusations reveal that Kirrthik allegedly struck Dhinessh multiple times with a chair during the chaotic fight, alongside Pradave and an associate named Muhammad Sajid. Furthermore, Kirrthik is also claimed to have attacked 24-year-old Naviinjaay C Nathan with a chair in the same back alley where the violence erupted.

As investigators continue their probe, authorities took the accused men back to the scene of the crime to reconstruct the events that led to this horrific brawl. The two women involved in the case have been offered bail set at S$30,000 each, with their next court appearance scheduled for October 28.

Legal Implications

The legal implications are serious for those involved. Should they be convicted of rioting while armed with a dangerous weapon, they could face up to 10 years in prison, along with potential caning. Those charged with voluntarily causing harm with a dangerous weapon could receive penalties of up to seven years in jail, fines, or a combination of punishments. Notably, women cannot be subjected to caning under current laws.

Connections to Murder Charges

In connection with this case, Muhammad Sajid is facing a more severe charge of murder, carrying the death penalty under Section 300(a) of Singapore's Penal Code—a law known for its strict stance on violent crimes.
