A Dire Reality for HIV Patients with Mental Health Issues
Recent research has unveiled a startling truth: individuals living with HIV who struggle with mental health disorders face a significantly higher risk of early death compared to their counterparts without such conditions. This alarming finding is featured in the Journal of the International AIDS Society.
What’s Behind the Numbers?
The study, spearheaded by Andreas D. Haas of the University of Bern, analyzed medical records and mortality data from clinical cohorts across South Africa and North America, from 2000 to 2021. Key contributors to the shortened life expectancy included late initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), poor engagement in healthcare, and elevated risks of suicide and accidental deaths.
Who Was Studied?
Over a staggering 250,000 individuals participated in this extensive study. In South Africa, 119,785 participants were involved, with nearly half diagnosed with a mental health disorder. Meanwhile, North America contributed 142,044 participants, with a shocking 66% facing similar mental health challenges.
