In a startling incident on April 16, a taxi driver, aged 59, and a 31-year-old woman were rushed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital following a dramatic multi-vehicle collision on the Tampines Expressway (TPE). This chaotic event unfolded just after the Punggol Road exit and sent shockwaves through the commuting community.
Reports indicate that this serious accident involved a staggering seven vehicles, including a taxi, two cars, and four trucks. Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene around 11:05 am, confronting a bewildering sight.
Images shared on social media captured the harrowing aftermath: a red TransCab taxi precariously perched on top of a white car, with the latter’s front end crushed and dislodged. Meanwhile, the taxi’s boot and rear door were badly crumpled, displaying the violent impact of the collision.
Authorities confirmed that the two hospitalized individuals were conscious while being transported for medical care, highlighting the severity of the incident yet suggesting a glimmer of hope for their recovery.
In a statement, the taxi operator, TransCab, confirmed that the driver was operating solo without passengers. They emphasized their commitment to cooperating with investigative authorities and updated that the driver’s condition remains stable, as confirmed by his concerned wife.
This catastrophic incident adds to a worrying trend, as it marks yet another chain collision on Singapore's expressways. Only months earlier, on January 18, eight cars and a van were involved in a tragic pile-up on the PIE, resulting in injuries to four individuals. Similarly, other multi-vehicle accidents have rattled commuters, raising concerns over road safety.
As investigations continue, questions loom over what could have caused such a chaotic scene on the bustling expressway. Drivers are reminded to stay vigilant and prioritize safety in the wake of these alarming incidents.
