Cancer: The Silent Assassin in Shanghai
In a startling revelation, cancer has emerged as the second leading cause of death among Shanghai residents, trailing only behind cardiovascular diseases. The Shanghai Health Commission unveiled these grim statistics just as the city's annual cancer prevention and control week commenced.
Alarming Numbers Revealed
Each year, approximately 92,900 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Shanghai, resulting in a staggering 38,500 fatalities. The most commonly reported cancers include lung, colorectal, and thyroid cancers, indicating a pressing health crisis.
Hope on the Horizon: Advances in Early Detection
Fortunately, there is a glimmer of hope. Thanks to enhanced cancer screening efforts, improved medical facilities, and increasing public health awareness, the early detection rate of cancer has soared to an impressive 42.8%. Moreover, the five-year survival rate now stands at 61.6%, positioning Shanghai among the best in China.
Screening Initiatives Making a Difference
Over the past decade, Shanghai has made significant strides in promoting colorectal cancer screenings within local communities. In the previous year alone, over 590,000 residents underwent free screening, which unearthed 6,145 potential pre-cancerous cases and diagnosed 745 cancer patients.
Comprehensive Cancer Trials Underway
Last year also saw the launch of a trial for screening various cancers—lung, colorectal, esophageal, gastric, liver, breast, and cervical—across 50 community health centers. High-risk factors were identified in 96,000 individuals, who subsequently received critical medical advice.
Accessibility and Prevention Resources Expand
This year, the screening service will be available across all health centers in the city. Residents can now easily access self-risk evaluations at grassroots facilities, making preventive measures more attainable for everyone.
Pioneering Guide For Cancer Prevention Released
In a collaborative effort, the Shanghai Anti-Cancer Association and Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center have created a comprehensive public guide on cancer screening and prevention. This guide covers 24 different types of cancers and outlines risk factors, preventative actions, and treatment options.
Prevention Through Awareness: Expert Insights
According to Dr. Zheng Ying from the cancer prevention department, over 4 million new cancer cases are recorded in China every year, with half deemed preventable through lifestyle changes and early screenings.
The Weight Factor: A Key to Cancer Prevention
Highlighting another critical point, Dr. Zheng noted that maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of up to 13 types of cancer, including colorectal, pancreatic, and breast cancers—risks that increase by 20% with obesity.
Citywalk: Fusing Fitness with Fun!
To promote healthy weight management, the Shanghai Health Commission has partnered with district governments to create 16 immersive citywalk routes. These routes encourage physical activity while allowing residents to explore the city's famous landmarks, parks, and cultural sites. Participants can enjoy fitness activities, health seminars, and even some delightful treats along the way!
A Special Invitation to Expatriates
For expatriates, the citywalks also feature traditional Chinese medicine venues and herbal parks, seamlessly blending health with local culture.
A Call to Action!
As Shanghai confronts these alarming cancer statistics, community engagement and preventive action become ever more vital. Let's raise awareness and take charge of our health together!
