In an engaging plea to Singaporeans, Workers’ Party (WP) leader Pritam Singh emphasized the importance of comparing the WP’s candidate slate with that of the People's Action Party (PAP) backbenchers. He noted that as the opposition party attempts to make its mark, voters should take a closer look and make informed choices.

Challenge to the Status Quo

Speaking at Bedok 85 Fengshan Hawker Centre, Singh addressed media alongside party chair Sylvia Lim. He stated, "When it comes to backbencher-for-backbencher comparisons, there's a compelling choice to be made." He urged voters to weigh the qualifications of WP candidates thoughtfully against those of the PAP.

Countering PAP Leadership

Singh’s remarks follow Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s assertion during a recent rally that the current opposition representation is sufficient. With WP holding only 10 out of 93 parliamentary seats from the 2020 elections, Wong stressed that voters should apply the same scrutiny to opposition candidates as they would to PAP members regarding their integrity and competency.

Different Visions for Singapore's Politics

Responding to Wong’s comments, Singh highlighted a fundamental difference in their political vision. He champions the idea that at least one-third of parliamentary seats should be occupied by opposition lawmakers, a stance divergent from Wong’s perspective.

The WP's Candidate Slate

In the upcoming elections, the WP will contest 26 out of 97 seats across various constituencies, including Aljunied, Sengkang, and East Coast. Singh remarked that if elected, these candidates would serve as backbenchers, reinforcing his belief that voters should thoroughly assess their options.

Facing Criticism with Transparency

When questioned about why WP did not contest the Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC, which resulted in a walkover for the PAP, Singh explained that deploying spare candidates would stretch resources too thin. He noted, "Having reserve candidates is crucial for potential emergencies in other constituencies."

Acknowledging Challenges and Opportunities

Singh also addressed the opposition's reaction to WP’s decisions, finding more understanding as the election approaches. He remarked on comments made by the People’s Power Party chief, dismissing them as part of the political landscape.

Confidence in the East Coast Team

Highlighting the strengths of WP's East Coast team, Singh introduced former Non-Constituency MP Yee Jenn Jong as a seasoned candidate. Having narrowly lost in a previous election, Yee brings invaluable experience and leadership capabilities to the team.

On the ground, both WP and PAP candidates have been connecting with constituents. During a joint walkabout, Yee was spotted exchanging pleasantries with PAP's Minister Edwin Tong, signaling a cordial but competitive election atmosphere. Yee expressed his return to politics with enthusiasm, explaining that his deep knowledge of the East Coast area fuels his commitment.
