Game-Changer in Climate Monitoring Set Sail!

The first of Airbus's groundbreaking MetOp-SG weather and climate satellites has officially embarked on its journey! Recently departing from the cleanrooms in Toulouse, France, the MetOp Second Generation-A1 satellite is now en route to Kourou, French Guiana, aboard the transport ship “Canopée.” Scheduled for its launch in August 2025, it will take to the sky aboard the advanced Ariane 6 rocket.

Six Satellites that Will Transform Meteorology!

The MetOp-SG program is an ambitious undertaking, featuring six satellites—three pairs of A-type and B-type units, each equipped with a unique set of cutting-edge instruments. The MetOp-SG A satellites will enhance atmospheric soundings and imaging, while the B-types will cover crucial microwave imaging and radar observations. This initiative is expected to secure essential meteorological data continuity well into the mid-2040s!

A Proud Legacy at Airbus!

Marc Steckling, Airbus Defence and Space's Head of Earth Observation, Science and Space Exploration, expressed enthusiasm for the mission, stating, "These satellites will strengthen Europe’s top-tier status in meteorological assessment from space, providing highly precise weather forecasting that benefits the entire globe. Having contributed to the original MetOp series, we are eager for the successful launch of this pivotal new series that will keep a vigilant watch over our planet."

Advanced Instruments for Enhanced Data!

The MetOp-SG A1 is packed with state-of-the-art instruments, including the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer - Next Generation (IASI-NG), crucial for weather forecasts, air quality, and climate studies. This cutting-edge tech was developed in collaboration with the French space agency CNES. Additionally, it features METimage, a visible and infrared imager created with the German Space Agency (DLR), along with the Microwave Sounder and the innovative Multi-Viewing, Multi-Channel, Multi-Polarisation Imager, designed to boost monitoring of aerosols and cloud characteristics.

Partnerships Driving Innovation!

The development of the MetOp Second Generation satellites is a testament to international collaboration, involving EUMETSAT, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the European Union’s Copernicus program, alongside CNES, DLR, and a consortium led by Airbus Defence and Space.

Long-Term Sustainability in Space!

Built in Airbus's Toulouse facility, the A-series satellites promise an operational lifespan of 7.5 years each, ensuring extensive coverage throughout a remarkable 21-year span. Meanwhile, the B-series satellites are under construction in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Anticipating the Launch!

The Ariane 6 program is a visionary project being executed by the European Space Agency (ESA). ArianeGroup leads the design and production, while Arianespace takes charge of launch operations at the Guiana Space Centre, meticulously orchestrating the deployment of the MetOp-SG A1 satellite into orbit.

A Future of Accurate Weather Predictions Awaits!

With its innovative technology and international collaborations, the MetOp-SG series is set to elevate our understanding of weather patterns and climate change—ensuring a brighter and more informed future for all!
