The European aquaculture industry is at a crossroads, facing escalating challenges that threaten its future. With disease outbreaks occurring more frequently, climate change wreaking havoc on aquatic ecosystems, and mounting pressures to reduce antibiotic use, there's no time to waste in finding solutions.
Enter Cure4Aqua—an innovative project funded by the EU's Horizon Europe initiative. This groundbreaking initiative is on a mission to revamp fish health and welfare while promoting sustainable aquaculture practices that rely less on pharmaceuticals. By uniting researchers, industry leaders, and policymakers, Cure4Aqua is set to revolutionize the way aquaculture diseases are diagnosed, prevented, and managed throughout Europe.
Launched in late 2022 and slated to run until 2027, this ambitious project boasts 31 partners from 16 countries, including prestigious research institutions, universities, SMEs, veterinary labs, and aquaculture producers. Coordinated by the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences (BCAS), Cure4Aqua is backed by an impressive budget of €4.8 million, making it one of the most extensive initiatives focused on disease management and animal welfare in European aquaculture.
