Researchers at the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Shihezi University, have unveiled a groundbreaking method to assess cotton Verticillium wilt (VW) that could transform agricultural monitoring!

With VWs posing a significant risk to cotton yields, accurately assessing their severity is essential for farmers aiming to manage outbreaks and lessen yield losses. Traditional grading methods in China, based on visible symptoms, are not only labor-intensive but often misalign with the actual impact on production.
The Problem with Existing Standards!
China's national grading standard identifies VW severity based solely on the percentage of infected leaves. Unfortunately, this outdated method fails to efficiently capture the true extent of yield loss. Manually counting symptomatic leaves in the field is cumbersome and prone to errors, especially given that VW symptoms can spread in a way that complicates remote assessments.
A Game-Changer: The Eight-Position Grading (EPG) Method!
In a bid to improve accuracy, the research team closely studied how VW progressed in cotton plants. They found that the leaves on the fruit branches (FL) better indicated potential yield losses than those on the main stem. This inspired them to create the EPG method, which zeroes in on the three most critical layers of leaves, streamlining assessments.
By focusing on just a select group of leaves for monitoring, the EPG method vastly simplifies data collection, cutting down on required labor and facilitating large-scale surveillance. Remarkably, this method correlates much more strongly with yield loss, revealing a 12% gradient of reduction compared to traditional grading.
Proven Accuracy with UAV Technology!
The researchers further validated their findings with theoretical simulations and drone-based experiments, revealing that the EPG method achieved an impressive estimation accuracy for VW severity (R² = 0.76), far surpassing the conventional GB method.
