Job Applications: The Truth Behind Job Descriptions

In the latest episode of the Work It Podcast, host Tiffany Ang and industry expert Han Lee delve into the often misleading world of job listings. Many candidates are deterred by strict requirements, such as 'five to seven years of experience.' But is this really what employers expect?

You Might Be Closer Than You Think!

Han Lee, a director at Lico Resources, assures job seekers that they don't need to tick off every box on a job description to apply. "The job description is often just a wish list," he explains. While there are essential skills needed for a position, many requirements are merely 'nice to have.' If you find yourself meeting 60-70% of the qualifications, go ahead and submit that application!

Beware of Job Listings: Are Some Just for Information Gathering?

The conversation turned to a concerning trend—companies that post jobs simply to collect resumes. Gerald Tan raised an interesting point, noting how candidates frequently complain about applying to positions without receiving any feedback. This can often imply that companies might still be searching for the right candidate or are merely gathering data.

Han highlighted that employers sometimes start the hiring interview process even before they have approved headcount, making candidates question the sincerity of these listings. "Sometimes the ideal candidate is identified, but hiring may be on hold until funding is available," he adds.
