Singapore's Game-Changing Price Comparison Program Launches!
Mark your calendars for September 1! Singapore is set to roll out a pioneering unit pricing pilot program that will transform how shoppers compare grocery prices across multiple brands and sizes. This exciting initiative was jointly announced by the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) and the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE).
A Smarter Shopping Experience Awaits!
For the next eight weeks, selected outlets from major supermarket chains like NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Prime Supermarket, Cold Storage, and Giant will participate in this innovative trial. Customers will soon see unit prices displayed for essential grocery items such as rice, meat, eggs, cooking oils, fruits, and vegetables. This means shoppers can easily compare prices based on unit measurements like per kilogram or per litre, making it far simpler to find the best value!
Empowering Consumers with Transparency!
CCCS and CASE emphasize that this initiative aims to enhance price transparency, enabling consumers to make informed purchasing decisions. During the pilot phase, a market survey firm will gather shopper feedback on the usefulness of unit pricing and any further enhancements that could benefit consumers. CCCS chief executive Alvin Koh encourages all shoppers to participate and share their experiences.
A Step Toward a Fairer Marketplace!
Melvin Yong, president of CASE, expressed enthusiasm about the program after advocating for unit pricing since 2022. He notes that similar initiatives in countries like the UK and Australia have delivered worthwhile results. Notably, CASE has already provided unit pricing for over 6,000 items in its Price Kaki app, which has delighted users, garnering over 170,000 downloads since March!
Government's Commitment to Consumer Protection!
Earlier this year, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong shared his hopes that unit pricing will improve transparency, empower consumers to make savvy choices, and deter misleading pricing strategies. Additionally, he announced the formation of a consumer protection review panel tasked with addressing key consumer issues and upgrading the local consumer protection framework.
Join the Movement for Change!
As industry practices evolve and consumer habits shift, this timely review aims to foster consumer empowerment and elevate industry standards. With your support and feedback, this pilot could be the beginning of a new era in shopping for groceries in Singapore. Get ready to shop smarter!
