SINGAPORE – In a groundbreaking move for the healthcare sector, the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) has unveiled a dedicated service aimed at addressing hereditary eye diseases.

Established in October 2024, the Ocular Genetics Service (OGS) is now the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and promises to revolutionize the diagnosis and management of inherited retinal and ocular conditions.

Historical Context and Need for the Service

Historically, patients faced a fragmented healthcare experience marked by limited access to genetic testing and a lack of integrated counseling, according to OGS clinical director Dr. Beau Fenner. Many were left managing symptoms without a clear understanding of the underlying genetic causes.

"Until routine and affordable genetic testing became available, many ocular conditions went undiagnosed, leaving families in the dark about their potential risks," Dr. Fenner, who has made Singapore his home after relocating from Australia, stated.
