SINGAPORE: In a significant unveiling event held on Saturday (April 5), the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) introduced two promising new candidates at the Jurong-Clementi Town Council: David Hoe, a charity director, and Cassandra Lee, a lawyer. The announcement was made by Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, emphasizing their roles in managing the Jurong, Clementi, and Bukit Batok areas as part of the newly revealed five-year master plan for the town council, aimed at 2026-2030.
A Glimpse into New Leadership
Cassandra Lee, a legal expert specializing in technology, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity, has a rich volunteer history, having actively engaged with the community in Yuhua for over 16 years. Fu highlighted her leadership in a barrier-free accessibility project, which showcases her dedication to enhancing the community's inclusivity.
David Hoe, who serves as director of philanthropy at the Majurity Trust, has previously been involved in grassroots initiatives at Jalan Besar GRC and Tampines GRC. His commitment to empowering youth through various development programs makes him a valuable addition to the team.
Grace Fu expressed her enthusiasm about these newcomers, stating, "They will bring new energy and experience in community bonding and building," as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
The event was attended by notable figures, including Bukit Batok MP Murali Pillai and Jurong GRC MPs Rahayu Mahzam, Xie Yao Quan, and Dr. Tan Wu Meng. Fu reassured attendees, "This team that you see today will run Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC and Jurong Central SMC, if we are given the mandate by you."
Electoral Changes and Future Aspirations
With the recent electoral boundary changes approved by the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee, Jurong GRC is now restructured into Jurong East-Bukit Batok GRC and a new single-member ward, Jurong Central SMC. Fu noted that despite these shifts, the team is committed to efficiently managing the community's needs.
Highlighting their ambitious master plan, Fu revealed more than 200 upgrading projects that aim to rejuvenate nine older estates. The proposal includes the innovative ‘Sports-in-Precinct’ initiative to promote active living, over 40 sheltered linkways for improved connectivity, and various upgrades to fitness corners and playgrounds.
Focus on Sustainable Community Development
Fu acknowledged the community’s previous feedback and efforts in enhancing living conditions. She shared that over the past five years, the town council focused on creating a cleaner environment, improving amenities, and boosting green spaces. Significant projects during this period aimed to enhance accessibility for seniors, including dementia-friendly amenities painted with colorful murals for better navigation.
Moreover, the Jurong-Clementi Town Council has made strides in upgrading its infrastructure, with nearly 1,600 out of 2,300 lifts being modernized. Mr. Xie, the town council chairman, reiterated their commitment to working closely with residents and stakeholders to maintain high standards in township management.
In a demonstration of their collaborative spirit, the town council also signed an agreement with Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital to promote the safe use of fitness equipment in public spaces.
The introduction of these new leaders marks a pivotal moment for the Jurong-Clementi community as they prepare for the 2025 elections, igniting anticipation and hope for continued growth and development in the years to come.
