How It Works: A Near-Magic Test
The magic lies in the test’s ability to use plasmonic nanoparticles that interact with light in astonishing ways. To perform the test, just add a droplet containing proteins, derived from a cheek or nasal swab, onto a membrane. As it dries, the coffee ring effect concentrates any disease biomarkers found within. Then, by adding another droplet of specially engineered nanoparticles, any present biomarkers cling to the particles, creating a detectable pattern shift in light—visible to the naked eye or through an AI app.
Incredible results can be achieved within 12 minutes, boasting 100 times more sensitivity than standard tests for COVID-19.

The research team can now detect crucial proteins, including biomarkers for sepsis, a rapid and dangerous inflammatory response often seen in older adults. Liwei Lin, a leading professor on the project, emphasizes the urgency: "Each passing hour is critical. Traditional bacterial cultures can take days, but our method could identify sepsis in just 10 to 15 minutes!"
