A cutting-edge digital application developed in Singapore is transforming how we identify pre-dementia among seniors. This AI-powered tool can detect early memory issues in just five minutes, boasting an impressive accuracy rate of up to 93%!
Introducing Pensieve-AI: This innovative app allows patients to create drawings on a tablet, which the AI then analyzes for signs of cognitive decline. Gone are the cumbersome methods of pen-and-paper tests, which ask seniors to draw a clock or recall unrelated words like banana, sunrise, and chair.
Transforming Dementia Screening
Following a comprehensive nationwide study that wrapped up in September 2024, Pensieve-AI’s accuracy matches that of the top-tier cognitive testing currently used. The findings were published in the esteemed scientific journal Nature Communications in March.
This groundbreaking app is a collaborative masterpiece from the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) and the Government Technology Agency of Singapore (GovTech) and is expected to launch by 2026.
Quick and Efficient Testing
Dr. Liew Tau Ming, a senior consultant from SGH’s psychiatry department, highlights that seniors can complete the Pensieve-AI test, which includes four drawing tasks, in a mere 3.5 minutes—far quicker than the traditional tests, which can take up to 30 minutes and require trained professionals.
Addressing a Growing Concern
Developed in response to the rising number of dementia cases among the aging population, this app is crucial. By 2030, it is estimated that nearly 80,000 out of nearly one million seniors in Singapore might be affected by dementia. Dr. Liew explains that mild cognitive impairment is often misidentified as regular aging, making early detection essential.
One poignant example comes from 84-year-old Madam Tan Yew Tee, who was identified with early dementia through Pensieve-AI. Her daughter, Nancy Hoon, 59, shared how they discovered her condition: "My mother loves bringing home brochures from the active aging center. That’s how we learned about Pensieve-AI. I had no idea her forgetfulness wasn’t just normal aging!"
A Brighter Future
Today, thanks to support from her daughter and engagement at an active aging center, Madam Tan is more active and social, leaving behind the days of merely watching TV. As Nancy says, "The social activities seem to have made her happier and more involved. It’s a blessing!"
With Pensieve-AI on the horizon, hope rises for early intervention in dementia, potentially changing lives across Singapore and beyond.
