Prepare for Major Traffic Jams at Singapore-Malaysia Checkpoints This Chinese New Year!

SINGAPORE: As the Chinese New Year approaches, travelers are being warned to brace themselves for severe congestion at the Singapore-Malaysia land checkpoints. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) issued a travel advisory on January 20, indicating that traffic is expected to be exceptionally heavy at both Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints between January 24 and February 1.

Due to ongoing enhanced security checks, travelers should anticipate longer wait times for immigration clearance. ICA is urging everyone to cooperate with their officers, adhere to traffic rules, and maintain lane discipline. Non-compliance will not be tolerated, and offenders could face repercussions.

Chinese New Year, which this year falls on January 29, is known for drawing large crowds as families reunite and celebrations commence. This surge in travel often leads to record-breaking numbers of crossings at the checkpoints.

Record-Breaking Numbers of Travelers

Just a few weeks prior, on December 20, 2024, a staggering 562,000 travelers crossed the Singapore-Malaysia land border—a record number that eclipsed the previous high of 553,000 set just a week earlier. During the recent year-end holiday period from November 15, 2024, to January 1, over 24 million travelers used the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, marking a 20% increase from the same timeframe in 2023.

Motorists, in particular, faced challenges, with some waiting up to three hours for immigration clearance. ICA is recommending that travelers consider utilizing cross-border bus services to help alleviate some of the congestion.

Tips for a Smoother Journey

Travelers should take note of several important reminders to ensure a hassle-free experience:

1. **Passport Validity**: Check that your passport has at least six months of validity remaining.

2. **Re-entry Permits**: Singapore permanent residents who have renewed their passports must ensure that their re-entry permits are correctly transferred.

3. **Long-term Pass Holders**: Notify ICA or the Ministry of Manpower about any changes to passport details prior to re-entering Singapore.

4. **Use of QR Codes**: For those traveling by car, utilizing QR codes can expedite the immigration process.

5. **Vehicle Entry Permits**: Ensure that foreign vehicles possess valid Vehicle Entry Permits, as those without valid documentation will be turned back.

6. **Settle Outstanding Fines**: Drivers with pending fines from government agencies must clear these before attempting entry.

Motorists are also reminded that cutting in queues is strictly prohibited and can result in dire traffic conditions and potential penalties.

Avoid Bringing Prohibited Items

Lastly, travelers are reminded not to bring prohibited or controlled items, such as vapes and 'bak kwa' (barbecued pork).
