2024-09-29

Penang's Ambitious Vision for 2030

In a promising announcement, Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasized new opportunities for collaboration with China that align with the ambitious Penang2030 vision. At a vibrant 75th anniversary celebration of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Chow articulated a clear vision for Penang to become a family-oriented, green, and smart state by 2030, perfectly complementing China's ongoing advancements in sustainable development and technology.

Key Areas for Collaboration

“We anticipate further collaboration with China in key sectors such as renewable energy, smart city initiatives, and innovation," Chow stated confidently. He praised China as an economic powerhouse, particularly in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, chip manufacturing, and big data analytics.

Investment and Economic Growth

Over the past decade (2014-2023), Penang has attracted an impressive RM13.2 billion in approved manufacturing investments from Chinese companies. Currently, the state is home to 53 Chinese enterprises, with a significant 46 in the manufacturing sector, five in global business services, and two in logistics.

Cultural and Tourism Impact

Chow also referenced the growing presence of Chinese food and beverage chains in Penang, highlighting popular names such as Mixue Ice Cream and Tea, Tea Expert, and Haidilao Hotpot. This cultural infusion is mirrored by a steady rise in Chinese tourism, with Penang welcoming 74,891 Chinese visitors through the Penang International Airport and an additional 8,391 via the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal in the first eight months of this year alone.

Strengthening Malaysia-China Relations

Consul General Zhou Youbin echoed these sentiments, expressing optimism for mutual growth between China and Malaysia. “China and Malaysia are not just friends; we are partners aimed at win-win cooperation. As we stand at a new historical starting point, our commitment to building a China-Malaysia community with a shared future continues to advance,” he asserted.

Recent Milestones in Bilateral Cooperation

Zhou highlighted recent significant milestones, including a visit by Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim to China, and the welcome of Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Malaysia, which resulted in 14 bilateral cooperation agreements spanning digital economy, green development, urban planning, and higher education.

Cultural and Educational Exchanges

Beyond economic collaboration, Zhou emphasized the goal of fostering cultural, educational, and people-to-people exchanges that can build upon the rich shared history between the two nations.

Bilateral Trade and Future Prospects

In recent months, bilateral trade between China and Malaysia soared to US$135.23 billion (RM557.86 billion), marking an 11% increase compared to last year. Additionally, as reforms unfold with 300 crucial measures introduced during the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the nation is eliminating restrictions on foreign investment in manufacturing sectors and steadily opening telecommunications, education, and healthcare for foreign participation.

Commitment to Strengthening Ties

The Chinese Consulate General in Penang is committed to further strengthening ties with Northern Peninsula states, paving the way for deeper partnerships. With over 400 attendees, including political leaders and consuls, the celebration on September 24 set the stage for exciting developments between Penang and China.
