SINGAPORE:

In a significant move, Singapore's ruling People's Action Party (PAP) has appointed Mrs. Bernadette Giam as the new branch chairperson for Sengkang East, a constituency currently under opposition control. This marks the second reshuffle for the Sengkang East division in just a matter of years, reflecting the party's ongoing adjustments in response to political dynamics.

Mrs. Giam takes over from Mr. Marcus Loh, who will assist with the transition while continuing his contributions within the party. In a heartfelt Facebook message, Mr. Loh expressed his decision to step back from the role, citing the need to prioritize his family’s well-being. He thanked Mrs. Giam for stepping up to take on the responsibilities of this vital position.

Sengkang GRC was established for the 2020 General Election and was notably won by the opposition Workers' Party, making it a strategic focus for the PAP. Under the new leadership of Mrs. Giam, who is the third person to hold this position in less than three years, the PAP is preparing to face the upcoming challenges as they gear up for the next General Election slated for November.

The reshuffle coincides with the announcement of the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC), underscoring the urgency for the PAP to consolidate leadership and strategy in this opposition stronghold. Mr. Loh had previously held the chair position for just 14 months, following lawyer Ling Weihong's brief term that began in March 2022.

Dr. Lam Pin Min, the chairperson for PAP's Sengkang West branch, praised Mr. Loh's contributions, calling him an “invaluable member” of the team. Meanwhile, the party highlighted Mrs. Giam's extensive background in community service and her commitment to empowering women, particularly through initiatives aimed at supporting working women.

Professionally, Mrs. Giam serves as a director for Creative Eateries, known for its diverse food and beverage brands including Bangkok Jam and Suki-Ya. Her community involvement is impressive, having held positions on the Women's Register of the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations (SCWO) from 2016 to 2022, and currently serving on the Nanyang Polytechnic Business Management Advisory Committee and the CHIJ Alumni Association.

Expressing his confidence in Mrs. Giam’s leadership, Dr. Lam remarked, "I look forward to her invaluable contributions to our mission of wholeheartedly serving the residents of Sengkang GRC."

As the PAP continues to adapt and strategize in this evolving political landscape, all eyes will be on their leadership and actions as the next General Election approaches. The challenge will be to regain trust and support in a constituency that has proven to be a tough battleground for the ruling party.
