Wastewater Catastrophe Strikes Bedok and Chai Chee
In a shocking turn of events on August 6, parts of Bedok Reservoir Road and Chai Chee were hit by a significant wastewater overflow, all traced back to a choked sewer located at a nearby Build-To-Order (BTO) construction site, according to Singapore’s national water agency, PUB.
Rapid Response and Investigation
Upon discovering this alarming incident early on August 6, PUB swiftly pinpointed the overflow to two specific areas—near Blocks 619 and 623 on Bedok Reservoir Road and an industrial site at 502 Chai Chee Lane. Investigating further, they found two manholes within the troubled BTO site obstructed by debris like sand and cement.
Construction Halted, Cleanup Underway
The Housing Development Board (HDB) promptly halted construction activities on the BTO site to assist in resolving this crisis. They assured the public that there would be no delay in the project’s overall timeline.
In a collaborative effort, HDB coordinated with PUB and the BTO contractor to address the sewage issue by deploying tanker trucks to flush the affected pipes and redirect overflow to unaffected manholes. Additionally, they organized cleanup operations and managed traffic disruptions in the vicinity.
Community Reaction and Oversight
The distressing situation came to light through a Facebook post by Workers' Party leader, Pritam Singh, who expressed concern after residents reported foul odors emanating from the area. Singh, whose Aljunied GRC constituency includes Eunos, actively visited the site, engaging with PUB officials and construction teams to oversee the immediate response.
During his visit, Singh observed crews working diligently to vacuum debris and ensure the diversion of wastewater. Construction workers even stepped in to assist with traffic management, showcasing community spirit amidst the chaos.
Investigation and Cleanup Continues
PUB deployed five tanker trucks to tackle the overflow and implemented strategic measures to improve water flow during peak hours. The agency confirmed that a thorough investigation will follow to determine the cause of the sewer blockage and to enforce necessary actions against responsible parties.
Residents Share Their Experiences
Despite the unpleasant conditions, residents like 94-year-old Choon Poh Choo continued their daily routines, asserting that the smell wouldn't hinder their activities. Others reported noticing the foul odor in their homes, with one resident, Madam Lee, humorously recounting how her husband mistakenly thought the smell was coming from her.
As of August 7, wastewater was still leaking from the inspection chamber, confirming that the cleanup operations were ongoing amid lingering odors.
What Happens Next?
As PUB and HDB work to rectify this issue, the focus remains on ensuring the community's health and safety, and preventing future incidents of this nature. Residents and local leaders are keeping a close watch on the developments related to this wastewater overflow saga.
