My Eye-Opening Journey to Hong Kong: 5 Surprising Lessons on Food, Transport, and the City’s Unmatched Efficiency!

In January 2025, I embarked on my first-ever trip to Hong Kong, a city I thought would mirror my hometown of Singapore. However, what followed were several surprising insights that completely reshaped my understanding of this vibrant metropolis.

Though both cities are often likened to one another for their urban dynamism, financial prominence, and high living costs, my four-day solo adventure in Hong Kong revealed stark contrasts that left an indelible impression on me.

1. The Unwritten Rule of Sharing Tables

My dining experience started with a cozy beef noodle restaurant where I unexpectedly found myself sharing a table with a stranger. As a middle-aged man settled in without a word, I was puzzled. However, I quickly learned this practice, known as “dap toi,” is a common dining norm in Hong Kong—rooted in the city’s spatial limitations and the need for efficient service.

With a population density almost unparalleled—over 7.5 million people in a land area slightly smaller than Rome—strangers dining together is simply pragmatic. This unique communal aspect fosters a sense of connectivity and efficiency in a crowded space.

2. Speak Up or Miss Out!

Navigating Hong Kong's public transport means stepping out of your comfort zone. I learned this the hard way on a minibus, also known as a public light bus, designed to dart you to off-the-beaten-path destinations quickly. As I traveled to Braemer Hill for breathtaking sunset views, the driver sped past my stop—an eye-opener for any introverted traveler.

I discovered that passengers need to verbally signal the driver with “yau lok” in Cantonese when they wish to disembark. In retrospect, I might have preferred the uphill walk to avoid this anxiety-inducing situation, but it was a valuable lesson in the city’s fast-moving lifestyle.

3. French Toast - Not Just for Breakfast

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I was eager to savor Hong Kong-style French toast. Unlike the sweet and syrupy version you might know from the West, this treat is deep-fried, stuffed with peanut butter, and drizzled with condensed milk—a delightful remnant of Hong Kong’s colonial history.

However, when I attempted to order it for breakfast, I was met with a firm refusal. In a surprising twist, Hong Kong-style French toast is considered more of an afternoon snack, part of the afternoon tea menu. Instead, I found myself enjoying a bowl of macaroni soup, which felt more suited for lunch!

4. Lines Are Long, But Don’t Fear—They Move Swiftly!

On my first day, I was daunted by the long lines outside popular eateries. However, I soon realized that waiting often leads to a quick dining experience in this bustling city. Thanks to the efficient dining culture, patrons eat swiftly and make way for the next, reminiscent of a single rider line at a theme park.

This efficiency allowed me to dive into delectable dishes like egg tarts and steamed rice rolls, if I only had a bit more patience during my explorations.

5. Life at Lightning Speed

While I thought I was accustomed to the fast pace of Singapore, Hong Kong took things to a whole new level. When dining with a local friend, her ability to finish a hearty plate of roasted pork rice in mere minutes left me in awe. “This is Hong Kong speed,” she quipped.

Everywhere I turned—from transportation to eating habits—everything seemed to be in overdrive. The MTR trains whisked travelers away every couple of minutes, and pedestrians moved as if every step was a race. It was exhilarating yet overwhelming all at once, but this vibrant energy is what truly embodies Hong Kong’s spirit.

Reflecting on my incredible journey, I realize that I have only scratched the surface of this dynamic city. Next time, I’ll be better prepared—both for the bustling ambiance and for a proper order of that irresistible French toast!

Stay tuned for my next culinary diurnal in Hong Kong—there are still countless flavors yet to taste!
