In a shocking turn of events just past midnight on August 30, a car crash in Hougang led to the arrest of two drivers on drug-related charges. The incident, which unfolded around 12:15 AM near a petrol kiosk on Hougang Avenue 2, involved a grey Toyota colliding with a stationary Mazda.
Witnesses were left stunned as the force of the crash overturned the Toyota. Mr. Isa, a 64-year-old petrol kiosk attendant, rushed to help when he heard the crash. He bravely freed the trapped driver, who exited the vehicle seemingly unscathed, but bizarrely asked for the nearest restroom.
Meanwhile, a nearby resident, Mr. Tan, noticed a man fleeing from the Mazda towards nearby housing blocks, raising suspicions about his intentions. Mr. Chew, another resident, reported that this man appeared to be trying to dispose of something before quickly returning to the scene, claiming he was fine.
When first responders arrived at approximately 1:30 AM, they assessed one individual for minor injuries, who ultimately refused to go to the hospital.
However, the night took a darker turn around 1:40 AM when Traffic Police began interrogating the Toyota driver. During the questioning, officers discovered a suspicious plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance, presumed to be a controlled drug, resulting in the immediate arrest of the 40-year-old man.
Forty minutes later, the situation escalated further as the driver of the rental Mazda—a 28-year-old man—was arrested for both drink driving and drug-related offences. Officers uncovered a cream-colored backpack in his vehicle packed with numerous e-vaporisers, including some linked to the drug etomidate, known in the underground scene as Kpods.
Both suspects now face serious repercussions, with their drug-related charges referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau for further investigation. The incident raises alarms about drug use and safety on Singapore’s roads.
