Overcoming Obsolete Technology

Mars Express, which has been spinning through the cosmos for over two decades, faces a significant challenge: its ring laser gyroscopes, vital for steering its instruments and antennas, are wearing out. Recognizing this, ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) has ingeniously devised a solution that harnesses input from star trackers to compensate for the gyros' diminishing functionality.

A Critical Turning Point for Mars Express

Back in 2017, ESA engineers noticed alarming wear on four of the spacecraft’s six gyros, threatening to cut its mission short. To salvage this scientific endeavor, the team adopted the star tracker solution and has since regularly refined it. Today’s update is a game-changer that enables continued operation well into the next decade!

Revolutionizing Gyro Usage

How did mission control manage this remarkable extension? By redefining what 'necessary' means. The ESOC team developed strategies to minimize the gyros' usage during operations, such as those instances when the star trackers might be obstructed.

One major enhancement involves special maneuvers called 'wheel off-loadings' (WOL), allowing the spacecraft to adjust its momentum. Initially, gyros were activated for these maneuvers to prevent the star trackers from losing sight. However, through extensive analysis, the team successfully reduced gyro use, turning them on only when absolutely necessary.

This new software update is especially critical as it prepares Mars Express for the upcoming Martian Moon Exploration (MMX) mission led by JAXA.Originally slated to launch in 2024, the mission's timeline was pushed back, making the sustainability of Mars Express even more vital.
