A Landmark Moment in Malaysian Automotive History
In a groundbreaking ceremony, five stunning electric vehicles (EVs) recently graced the assembly plant in Tanjong Malim, Perak, eagerly anticipating the presence of esteemed guests, including Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Proton's Electric Revolution Begins
On September 4, Proton, Malaysia's national carmaker, inaugurated its first EV assembly plant at the Automotive High Technology Valley (AHTV), situated just 80 km north of Kuala Lumpur. This facility is set to produce Proton's inaugural electric model, the e.MAS 7, initially manufactured in China since its launch in 2024. The local assembly is expected to commence later this month.
Building a Thriving EV Ecosystem
The first phase of Proton’s EV plant has an investment of RM47 million (S$14.4 million) and boasts an annual assembly capacity of 20,000 vehicles, with the potential to scale up to 45,000 as the facility reaches full operational capacity. This move signals Malaysia's commitment to transform Tanjong Malim into a leading EV hub, inviting more automotive enterprises to set up shop.
A Vision for the Future
In 2022, former Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob outlined plans for Tanjong Malim to serve as a high-tech manufacturing and supply chain center, essential for the country's burgeoning EV industry. AHTV aims to create around 160,000 jobs by 2030, contributing an impressive RM32 billion to the economy, bolstered by advancements in research and development and automotive manufacturing.
Connecting the Dots for Growth
To enhance AHTV’s logistics, a railway spur will be developed, linking the hub to the Keretapi Tanah Melayu (KTM) network. This vital connection will facilitate the transport of raw materials and completed EVs to Port Klang, one of the world's busiest ports.
Showcasing Innovation on a Global Stage
Prime Minister Anwar emphasized the urgency of producing a competitive and affordable Proton EV by the Asean summit in October 2025, where it will be showcased to global leaders. EV registrations are on the rise, with a remarkable uptick in the market as nearly 26,070 vehicles were registered in just the first seven months of 2025.
Foreign Investments Fueling Growth
Chinese EV giant BYD is making strides by establishing an assembly line at AHTV, set to launch by mid-2026. The swift approval process highlights Malaysia's attractiveness as an investment destination in the auto sector.
A Collaborative Future
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced ongoing feasibility studies for a railway connection from AHTV to the nearby Behrang KTM Station, which promises to further enhance operational efficiency.
Proton's Expansion Plans
Proton's e.MAS 7 has quickly become Malaysia's favorite EV, with nearly 5,000 units sold in just the first seven months of 2025. With plans for the next EV model, the e.MAS 5, which targets affordability, Proton aims to strengthen its position in the market.
A Call for Investment and Innovation
During the launch, the Prime Minister recognized the pivotal role of Chinese partner Geely in advancing Malaysia's automotive engineering capabilities, urging them to deepen their investment and education initiatives within the country.
Training the Next Generation of EV Experts
With 30 Proton staff trained to support the assembly of the e.MAS 7, the future of Malaysia's EV industry looks bright. Young operators like Mohd Alif Daniel, who have received additional training in China, represent the new wave of talent ready to power Malaysia’s ambitious automotive future.
