In a surprising turn of events, Singapore's Health Sciences Authority (HSA) is broadening its approach to vaping offences, announcing a review of sentencing submissions for all vape-related cases—not just those involving Kpods. This shift was revealed in a district court session on August 25.
What Are Kpods?
Kpods are a type of e-vaporiser infused with etomidate, a potent anaesthetic that will soon be categorized as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act, effective September 2024.
Court Proceedings Unfold
During the court hearing, HSA prosecutor Jolene Chia informed District Judge Wong Li Tein of the directive to reconsider sentencing for all types of vape offences. This development comes as part of a larger initiative to examine the severity of vaping penalties.
The Case of Orison Toh Chun Kee
A significant case currently under scrutiny involves Orison Toh Chun Kee, 28, who faces four charges for vape-related offences, including possession of a staggering 1,639 vape sets intended for sale. Toh was expected to plead guilty on the same day of the hearing, but the HSA requested an adjournment to reassess potential sentencing.
